Heavy snowfall has brought chaos to parts of southern Germany : air and rail traffic is blocked in the Bavarian capital Munich. After first suspending flights until noon Saturday 11:00 GMT Munich airport later said it would be closed . A spokesman said 760 flights were affected. More than 40 centimeters 16 inches of snow fell overnight from Friday to Saturday according to weather officials. Authorities asked residents to stay indoors for their safety. The winter weather has also disrupted train services with rail operator Deutsche Bahn saying that Munichs main station cannot be served. It said travelers should expect flight delays and cancellations across the region and most buses streetcars and commuter trains are out of service in Munich. Police in Lower Bavaria said they made 350 weather-related interventions Friday night leaving five people slightly injured in traffic collisions. Much of Germany has been snowing and experiencing sub-zero temperatures for several days. According to weather forecasts the largest amount of snow is expected in Algoja in southern Bavaria on Saturday with another 30-40 cm forecast. A gradual weakening is expected in the afternoon. All flights were suspended at Munich airport on Saturday after a winter storm brought snow to southern Germany and parts of Austria Switzerland and the Czech Republic hampering travel across the region. The airport initially announced a halt to air traffic until noon Saturday but the airport later announced that flights would be canceled until 6 a.m. Sunday. Other airports in the region including in Switzerlands financial capital Zurich also announced weather-related flight delays and cancelations. Trains to and from Munich Central Station were also halted Germanys national railroad said advising passengers to postpone or re-route their travel. The dpa news agency reported that some passengers in Munich and the nearby city of Ulm spent Friday night on trains because of the stoppage. According to the local transportation service no buses or streetcars were running in Munich as of midday Saturday. The bad weather also affected some subway and regional train lines.,
