The Sony ECM-XYST1m is a stereo microphone as well as a mono ish mic that sits on the Sony hotshoe and communicates with the camera without a lead. However used this way the camera will only take audio in auto gain mode. If you use the supplied lead you can then go into manual mode. I did find though that this microphone needs quite a lot of gain used that way. Im guessing that this helps to stop the pumping that can happen with auto levels. Its not massively active with the pumping unless you get a massive sound into the front. Is it better than the internal mics of Sony cameras? I guess so but I feel that the self noise is just a little higher than it should be. Thats OK outside but not so good indoors.
